Abstract
A byte error is also called a b -bit byte error when a byte consists of b bits. The authors abbreviate `t -fold b -bit-byte error-correcting (or -detecting)´ as t -b EC (or t -b ED), `t -fold unidirectional b -bit-byte error-correcting (or -detecting)´ as t -Ub EC (or t -Ub ED), and `all-unidirectional-error-detecting´ as AUED, t -b EC/d (⩾t )-b ED Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, which include shortened and lengthened RS codes, are capable of t -Ub EC/d -Ub ED, but RS codes are not fit for control of the predominant errors in byte-organized computer memories, i.e., unidirectional byte errors. They propose a construction of t -Ub EC/d -Ub ED codes and given a large number of more efficient codes than the t -b EC/ d -b ED RS codes for b =4 to 8. Efficient encoding schemes remain to be investigated for the inner codes of the proposed construction
