Abstract
An architecture for ATM networks to provide more reliable transmission to support connectionless and multicast services for short message transmission is introduced in this paper. This architecture suggests to use a logical ring concept to form virtual legacy shared-medium networks in the ATM layer. With the use of ATM cell blocks and a Reed-Solomon code based cell-coding scheme in transmission, the proposed architecture can support multipath-transmission by maximizing the use of left bandwidth so that the packet loss probability can be reduced in a range from several to tens magnitudes compared to existing schemes
