Abstract
The paper presents an analysis of the performance of an asynchronous binary code division multiple access fibre-optic system. Heterodyne detection is assumed. An approximate expression for the average bit error rate is derived, taking into account the effects of shot noise, laser phase noise and multiple access interference. The author presents numerical results which show that laser phase noise and multiple access interference impose a very low limit on the number of stations that can simultaneously use the channel
