Abstract
Two projects are underway to develop expert system software to leverage system control operator skills while improving the Defense Communication System (DCS) control effectiveness. The author describes the roles of the two expert systems at the middle and bottom layers, respectively, of the DCS control hierarchy. A project seeks to distribute expert system modules throughout the DCS for greater system control robustness and efficiency. These projects are discussed in the more general context of controlling large systems of independent elements, using simulation as a tool for knowledge development, testing, and operator training, and looking to such future developments as learning abilities in distributed, expert system control structures
