Abstract
Metalclad substations using SF6 as the principle insulant are by no means a new concept having been introduced in the late 1950s. Today, its application especially in areas of high electrical load density such as towns and industrial centres, is world-wide. Since its introduction specifications have changed considerably, particularly with regard to safety, operational requirements and maintenance considerations. Here, the author describes how, in order to meet these latest specifications, GEC ALSTHOM has recently developed a range of 145 kV GIS, type designated F75
