Abstract
In this paper, the handover initiation control and connection establishment, have been investigated and appropriate methods have been proposed. A simulation model has been developed and used to study the impact of various connection establishment mechanisms (backward/forward) on the performance of handover in a single and multi-layer cell architecture. The mean number, the probability and position of handover failure occurrence have been estimated for backward, forward and the proposed scheme. The simulation results shows that in multi-layer cell architecture, depending on the direction of handover, i.e., pico to micro or micro to pico, the forward and proposed flexible methods, prove considerably high improvements in terms of reduction of handover failure if compared with single layer system
