  • Abstract
A digital cross-connect system for asynchronous signals of the North American hierarchy has been developed. The system uses time-division switching to handle 128 DS3 signals and provides nonblocking cross-connections for any of the 3584 constituent DS1 signals. By sharing the time-division switch, the system can cross-connect intact DS3 signals to other DS3 signals. Because functions such as provisioning, operation, maintenance, and cross-connect mapping are entirely software-controlled, centralized administration of network equipment is possible
