Abstract
The magnetically controlled shape memory alloy (MSMA) is a new type of functional materials, which has large strain and high efficiency of electromechanical energy conversion. In this paper the shape variation mechanism and magnetically controlled characteristic of MSMA material, the operation principle of inchworm type MSMA linear actuator as well as the design and control method of the actuator are introduced. The experimental results of an inchworm MSMA prototype linear actuator are also presented.
