Abstract
Summary form only given. In this paper we report 5 W cw in a collimated beam, with 80% of the power in a diffraction-limited main lobe, from a single mode input flared gain element in a functional, external-cavity architecture. The 5 W cw power achieved in this work is five times higher than previously reported from a single-spatial mode external-cavity laser diode and is 50% higher than any other single-spatial-mode laser diode.
