  • Abstract
This paper describes the design, realization and commissioning of M25 London orbital motorway CCTV enhancement scheme using digital transmission technology which represents a step-change in the complexity of CCTV systems used by the Highways Agency. The use of an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network has added significantly to the functionality of the existing CCTV systems. Its use has required some considerable integration skills to provide a seamless coherent system that provides the police operators with what they need to monitor the motorway. In the process of upgrading the system, the valuable asset of optical fibres has been exploited and its use optimized. By use of leading edge digital technology, capacity for other services has been created.
