Abstract
The author covers Hartmanis´ activities during the middle years of his career, from 1965, when he came to Cornell as chairman of a newly formed Computer Science Department, until 1978. He discusses how Hartmanis developed a department and, at the same time, strongly influenced the direction of computer science as a distinct discipline. He outlines the direction of Hartmanis´ research in complexity theory during this period
