  • Abstract
A relativistic S-band magnetron coupled with a traveling wave resonator represents a new scheme for a microwave pulse compressor to generate output pulses of a few nanosecond duration at gigawatt power level and above. Experiments on the resonator charging by the relativistic magnetron have been conducted. A short duration of the energy storage phase allows one to use conventional microwave components, directional couplers and a circulator, at up to gigawatt power. Stabilization of the frequency generated by the magnetron was achieved using an interference load, whose spectrum coincides with the spectrum of the traveling wave resonator. Resonator charging at two different frequencies, 2.933 GHz and 2.840 GHz was demonstrated. Switching between the frequencies is realized by changing magnetic field in the magnetron. Resonator gain of ~10 dB has been obtained.
