  • Abstract
During the draining to earth of a lightning current, the protection system generates an electromagnetic disturbance in the protected volume. The calculation code realized by the authors is able to evaluate the transient electromagnetic behavior of a complete lightning protection system regardless of the structure complexity and the location conditions. The model accounts for possible nonlinear phenomena due to the local transversal discharges that take place when high impulsive currents are draining to earth by means of the lightning protection system conductors. Some numerical results are given to highlight the electromagnetic disturbance level in the protected volume varying according to different structures of typical lightning protection systems. In addition, the results show the weight of the ionization phenomena in the electromagnetic interference (EMI) analysis
