Abstract
The input and output conditions for a regenerative thyristor bridge convertor can be improved by adopting `flywheeling¿ techniques. The paper explains the flywheeling process and describes two ways in which it can be applied to single-phase and three-phase bridges. Detailed comparison is made between the many aspects of convertor performance with normal control and with flywheeling. For single-phase bridges substantial improvements can be made, particularly in the cost of output smoothing and power factor correction, but for three-phase bridges the advantages are rather more restricted.
