Social network analysis and visualization [Applications Corner]

The notion of a social network, and associated methods of analysis, is permeating an increasing number of application domains, including, e.g., communications, bibliometry, and systems biology. This article provides a short introduction, and an overview of the foundations of this field, focussing primarily, but not excusively, on methods.
