  • Abstract
In this paper, a new method based on the combination of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and biogeography-based optimization (BBO) algorithm for voltage/reactive power control and simultaneously loss reduction in power systems is presented. The purpose is to provide a solution, which does both voltage improvement and loss reduction for power system. This hybridization technique enhances the exploration and exploitation capability of the swarm. To validate the effectiveness the proposed HPSOBBO method is applied on IEEE 118-bus system and its performance is compared to conventional PSO, general passive congregation PSO (GPAC), local passive congregation PSO (LPAC), coordinated aggregation (CA) and Interior point based OPF (IP-OPF). The numerical results show that HPSOBBO could find high-quality solutions with more reliability and efficiency.
