Abstract
With the increased sharing of frequencies in the SHF band by terrestrial and satellite communication systems potential interference between these systems is becoming a greater problem. One of the important interference mechanisms is that due to scattering by hydrometeors, e.g., rain and melting snow. A model is needed for interference and coordination calculations. The analysis and results are presented of the first phase of an investigation to explore the possibility of developing such a model for bistatic scattering by rain and melting snow. This phase deals primarily with backscattering from rain. The approach was successfully applied to the evaluation of the attenuation and phase characteristics of rain and melting snow over a frequency range of 1-1000 GHz and rainrate range of 5-100 mm/h
