Abstract
In Japan, about 43000 passenger railcars are in operation and currently about 30000 cars (70%) have been provided with air conditioning equipment. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has been engaged in the manufacture of railcar air conditioning equipment since 1950, totalling about 71000 units for about 20000 cars. They are available in a wide spectrum of types-roof mount, under floor, floor mount, and split. Reflecting the rapid progress in electronic and precision processing technologies, new developments have been made in regard to energy saving, improved comfort and reduced weight. The authors report on these new developments
