Abstract
An algorithm for determining the distortion for different data partitions in H.264/AVC is proposed. In this algorithm the distortion for any data partition received at the decoder in lossy channels can be recursively derived at the encoder. The overall distortion caused by quantization, error propagation, and error concealment are all considered. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the algorithm can provide one way to accurately evaluate the importance of different data partitions to the reconstructed video quality.
