Abstract
An approach for the simultaneous tuning of fuzzy power system stabilizers (FPSSs) using the recently introduced Bat Algorithm (BA) optimization technique is presented. FPSSs used in the study are based on a simple fuzzy control algorithm, where a minimum number of controller tuning parameters are required. The FPSSs design problem is formulated as a constrained optimization problem, with a time domain based cost function to be minimized using BA optimization. Effectiveness of the proposed BA tuned FPSSs (BAFPSSs) in damping power systems oscillations is verified in a multi-machine power system under different operating conditions and disturbances. Performance of BAFPSSs is compared against conventional designed PSSs and FPSSs tuned with the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm.
