  • Abstract
The voltage surge due to fast switching insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) and resonance can introduce voltage surge and distort the inverter output voltage/current waveforms. This may cause premature failure to sensitive loads and introduce harmonics in the grid voltage/current waveforms. This paper investigates the impacts of voltage surge and resonance on power electronic converter-fed grid-connected wind farms and suggests remedial measures to mitigate those adverse impacts are suggested. To investigate the impacts of voltage surge and resonance, a simulation model for the grid-connected variable speed wind turbine is developed using Matlab/SimpowerSystems, which include wind turbine, power converters with associated controllers, local load and the grid. An LC filter is designed and implemented to mitigate the impacts of voltage surge and resonance. Results show that the proposed filter can improve the inverter output voltage/current waveforms significantly and mitigate the impacts of voltage surge and resonance.
