Abstract
This paper presents the control and integration of a smart energy storage system (SESS) to a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind power plant. For the purpose of long-term energy management the fuel cell/electrolyzer (FC/ELZ) is utilized in the SESS, whereas the ultra-capacitor is dedicated to the SESS in order to compensate for the short-term transient energy fluctuations caused by wind speed variations or load changes. The control schemes enable the integration of the SESS to the wind turbine system and determine the SESS power that should be generated according to the amount of available energy in the dc-link. By maintaining the dc-link voltage constant at the rated value the output ac voltage of the inverter is immune to fluctuations despite of the wind power interruption or sudden load changes. The performance of the integrated system is verified under sudden load changes and wind speed variations in Matlab Simulink environment. The results demonstrate the applicability of the overall operation and control architecture for the integrated system.
