Abstract
Heterogeneous wireless sensor network is a prospective field in the world of detection and surveillance. To take advantage, we should pose the question of where, what type and how many heterogeneous sensors should be deployed in an optimal way. In this paper, we seek the answer by developing a theoretical framework based on optimal control theory. Following a previously proposed optimal deployment technique for homogeneous sensors, we formulate the heterogeneous sensor deployment as a linear quadratic regulator problem. We use dynamic optimization technique and sweep method to find optimal placement of heterogeneous sensors. Using different set of heterogeneous sensors, we show that our proposed algorithm perform the required task in a cost effective way over homogeneous sensors.
