Abstract
The authors start by identifying the distinguishing characteristics of the rail mode of transport and then describe the railway traction duty and the limitations to performance. They provide an overview of the different types of railway traction machines and discuss the approaches for providing and controlling the tractive effort of both locomotive-hauled and multiple unit trains. The paper is concluded with a summary of the main features of railway traction power supplies.
