Abstract
Thermal degradation mechanisms of automotive cable insulators made of PVC and XLPE matrices have been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy. Impact of degradation at the macroscopic scale was monitored by uniaxial tensile testing and dielectric spectroscopy. It is found that elastic and fracture properties drop well before insulation properties.
