Abstract
The applications with different transmission priorities and quality of service (QoS) requirements are supported by IEEE 802.11p standard. It categories the access categories into four priority levels to ensure successful transmission of higher priority traffic compared to lower priority traffic in a vehicle. However, if a nearby vehicle also has the same priority packet to be sent at the same instant, a packet collision is expected. This paper, proposes a priority based channel access scheme. Each vehicle access the channel based on its calculated priority value. The priority is calculated considering both location of the vehicle and the traffic in that. Simulation results show that the scheme can ensure successful transmission, reducing collision leading to overall throughput improvement.
