Abstract
Wind energy is the fastest growing renewable energy source. In wind power market Double Fed Induction Generator, is popular wind turbine system due to its reduced mechanical stress and high efficiency compared to others. But it is very sensitive to grid disturbances and can damage the power electronic converters connected to the machine due to over voltage and over current due to fault ride through. Therefore, protection elements which disconnect the machine from grid during fault are essential, crowbar is used as a basic protection. But, in such cases, the reliability of the system gets affected which is not acceptable due to the high penetration of wind energy into the grid. Fault ride through (FRT) is a mechanism by which the wind turbine can be connected to the system during the voltage dip. Many hardware and software control methods are implemented for the uninterruptible operation of DFIG during the grid voltage fluctuations. This paper presents an investigation on DFIG wind turbine with a control on rotor side based on controlling the rotor speed under various fault.
