Abstract
Prediction of the mechanical properties (modulus and strength) of a mica reinforced epoxy composite has been examined. Influence of mica platelet volume fraction and its aspect ratio (length to thickness ratio) on the predictability of the mechanical properties has been evaluated; theoretical results are compared against the experimental values. The role of failure modes, platelet pull-out and fracture, in controlling the mechanical properties has been studied using scanning electron microscopy. Theoretical upper and lower limits on the flexural strength of the composite have been proposed.
