Abstract
To achieve environmentally compatible products Siemens has developed a business strategy described mainly in a standard to be applied for new product developments. Among others the strategy consists of the application of 40 rules for the design of an environmentally compatible product, their integration in the existing product development scheme and management system and by that promoting innovation. With some examples e.g. for mobile phone base station it is proven that strong environmental and financial improvements can be achieved. Our standard is in compliance with internationally agreed IEC Guide 109. Creating new standards like that for ETN (=equivalent to new)-parts helps to achieve acceptance for reuse. A proposal for the efficient declaration of the materials content of a product will help to achieve a better exchange of information
