Abstract
This paper reports a 3D finite-difference simulation method for modeling measurement-while-drilling (MWD) antennas. Formulated in a cylindrical coordinate system, the modeling algorithm can accurately model the geometry of the tool body and, particularly, the slotted-collar antenna structure. Moreover, our numerical method can simulate the effect of magnetically permeable materials that are filled in the slots for better antenna performance. We applied the finite-difference method to analyze a 9.5-in MWD tool and showed excellent agreement with laboratory experiments.
