Abstract
An antenna system with seven different printed elements, integrated into a small handset, is presented. Two PIFAs have been designed to be used in the frequency bands of the standards GSM1800, UMTS, IEEE 802.11b, and Bluetooth. Four IEEE 802.11a IFAs have been integrated along the handset upper edges. An additional GPS IFA with circular polarization has also been integrated along one handset corner. The antennas have been optimized to have small envelope correlation in order to provide multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) enhanced capacity. A prototype has been fabricated and tested. The good agreement obtained between numerical simulations and experimental results has validated the antenna concept.
