Abstract
We have compared three configurations of two-stage L-band Er-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) with gain-clamped characteristics. The results show that for a certain configuration which incorporates a fiber grating laser in the second stage, the best gain-clamping performance (Pcrit=-13 dBm) and the lowest noise figure (≤5 dB) is obtained for the same pumping conditions. Furthermore, we find that the transient power excursion of this configuration is less than those associated with two other configurations.
