Abstract
Scotland has a long history in optics, led by figures including Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Brewster, Maxwell and Bell, and was a centre in the development of photography. Recent innovations include optics in telecommunications, gravitational wave detectors and astronomy. This paper describes some of the major developments in optical sciences in Scotland from the 17th century through to the present.
