Abstract
We discuss the higher order sliding mode technique. We highlight the efficiency of such a control design with respect to finite time convergence and robustness in the case of relative degree greater than one. We also point out some difficulties due to the fact that some derivative terms will be very large. Consequently, we propose a smooth sliding manifold for system with relative degree greater than one. The paper ends with an illustrative example.
