Abstract
Bandwidth reservation is needed whenever applications compete for limited shared bandwidth and QoS must be provided. This paper presents our proposed bandwidth reservation scheme, which is designed on top of the universal plug and play (UPnP) protocol. It takes advantage of the main features of UPnP and relies on the expected central role of the residential gateway in the in-home digital network. Prototype implementation confirms the feasibility of the proposed solution and shows its applicability. In most cases, it is classified according to the kind of data link layer adopted in the home network and the type of traffic actually requesting bandwidth reservation.
