Abstract
Summary form only given. This paper describes the VKA-7934B which is a fixed-tuned, aircooled, single-stage depressed collector klystron, rated for 2 kW CW minimum output power, operating in the frequency range from 21 GHz to 22 GHz. There were several unique requirements which this design addressed. The application requires extreme uniformity of output power; thus minimizing the gain slope of the operating band was essential. The klystron has been designed to meet a gain flatness specification of 0.1 dB/20-MHz at both rated power and -13 dB from saturation. Another unique feature was the use of the single-stage depressed collector. The collector is depressed 10% negative with respect to ground, and can be depressed up to 15% without impacting RF performance.
