Abstract
This paper presents a multi-model reference control (MRC) approach for queue-based access and congestion control procedures in communication networks. The model references (MRs) are used to address the problem of selecting the correct target value of the control scheme as a function of the statistical characteristics of the traffic. The target queue length is computed as a weighted sum of the outputs of the different MRs. The choice of the weight is accomplished by evaluating online the MRs´ behavior - in terms of efficiency in the network utilization, achievable queuing delay and/or loss percentage - in response to the actual traffic feeding the system. As a case study, an access control scheme is considered and its performances are evaluated via OPNET simulations.
