Abstract
In this paper, we review the main concepts of IEC 61131-3 software model and we discuss some of the weak and ambiguous points of the standard that should be clarified before implementing it. We also show the main guidelines of a specific implementation, based on POSIX/C and its Real- Time extensions, which is a much more general framework. This will facilitate the exccution of PLC-like system on a wide range of computers, provided their operating system is POSlX compliant. We consider the example of PC s and RTLinux.
