Abstract
Summary form only given. Periodic structures (i.e. gratings) are used as reflectors and filters in a number of different optoelectronic devices. More complicated structures such as sampled gratings, chirped gratings and superstructure gratings are used to create specific reflection or filter functions. This talk will describe an analytical (approximate) general treatment of the properties of these structures. It will be shown how the conventional coupled-mode-theory results follow from this more general approach.
