Abstract
This paper considers power consumption of order reduced IIR filters. Power consumption is here described by parameters that depict activities of basic filter components as multipliers, adders and delay elements. Filter structure plays an important role in power consumption. Here we selected cascade second order section (CSOS) as an optimal structure because of its very stable scaled coefficients. A major factor that affects activities of filter elements is the representation of filter coefficients. We compared influence of standard twos complement representation of numbers and promising canonical sign digit representation (CSD) on filter multiplier activities.
