Abstract
The background to Engineering Safety Management (The Yellow Book) is explained. Its use in supporting safety assurance for new products that require approval for use on the UK rail network is described. Recent developments in the Yellow Book are described, which extend the scope to encompass the operational stage of the railway asset life cycle - i.e. the application on the YB safety fundamentals to railway maintenance, the challenges and the opportunities that it presents.
