Abstract
Abstract On the basis of research projects about the risk assessment and control of the ship navigation by the way of Formal Safety Assessment (FSA), a brief introduction of the aims, characteristics and steps of the FSA, together with its practical application to the safety pilotage and navigation in Shanghai Harbour Pilot Station and the Container Line of China Ocean Shipping Company/Shanghai Ocean Shipping Company in China were described. Moreover, some information and data about the assessment and control of the safety navigation of ship from the research projects of the "Application of FSA to Safety Pilotage in Shanghai Harbour" and "Application of FSA to Safety Navigation of Ships" together with the Shanghai Harbour Pilot Administration Station, the Container Line of China Ocean Shipping Company and Shanghai Ocean Shipping Company work were provided. Finally, some ideas and suggestions were put forward for promoting the application of FSA in the prevention and reduction of the ship navigation accidents.
