Abstract
Derived from space technologies that are being applied for optimized momentum or inertia flywheels within satellite attitude control systems, a kinetic energy storage unit has been developed by Company Aerospatiale. Main features of this unit are an electro-magnetic suspension system, a motor-generator of 3 KW power, a heavy steel rotor storing 1 KWh useful energy, placed inside a vacuum container, and the associated electronics. This device offers attractive technical characteristics and is being tested by the French telephone administration (CNET) in view of its application as a back up energy source. Other units, of larger capacities, and other utilisations, are under preparation.
