This paper divides the labor status into 3 catalogues: employment, unemployment and out of labor force, and then analyzes the influencing factor of the labor status based on multinomial logit model and the micro data coming from the Urban Household Survey conducted by State Statistics Bureau (SSB) in 2006. The estimation results confirm that ??discouraged worker effect?? dominates in nowadays urban China. Those groups, such as female, less educated and the elderly are more likely be unemployed and more likely to leave the labor market. The reason for them to leave the labor market is not that they don´ t want a job, but that they cannot find a job under severe labor market condition. To improve the situation, the paper makes some policy recommendations.
