Abstract
This paper proposes a physical statistical modelling of the land mobile satellite (LMS) propagation channel in various types of environments at L- and S-bands. Of particular interest are the land mobile satellite scenarios including buildings and forested areas. The channel is assumed to be constituted of two independent components namely the shadowing direct signal and the diffuse multipath. Both contributions are thus predicted separately using more or less simplified propagation models along canonical elements representing building sided roads and tree sided roads. The philosophy behind this approach is then to apply these models to urban, suburban and rural virtual scenarios drawn from statistical distributions of the canonical elements. Simulation results are eventually compared to experimental results in order to validate the physical/statistical model.
