Abstract
This paper presents a summary of recent developments in modeling and optimization of machining processes, focusing on milling operations. With a brief analysis of research on machining parameters selecting system, in this system, a compact selection method based on expert rules, which were obtained from experimental results and extracted from the knowledge of skilled operators, is presented. Expert rules are evaluated by the fuzzy set theory. The developed fuzzy model uses improved fuzzy petri nets rules, The system was developed on a PC using MATLAB Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. Inevitably, there are many machining parameters (surface roughness, feed rate, cutting speed, cutting depth, corner radius, vibration, etc.) that should be considered in milling processes. Selection of these parameters is still an ill-defined problem, which are not easy to model, and based on the experiences of specialists. In this system, feed rate, cutting speed, and cutting depth, are the inputs while the outputs are surface roughness, and removal rate. The remaining parameters are considered at constant rate during machining. The system is a compact tool that can be easily used by an average operator and provides the machining parameters which lead to better surface quality according to the selected operation.
