Abstract
This paper considers the very many ways in which humans, insects, birds, and fish firstly interface with the outside world, and secondly how they control and communicate internally. It is hoped that this will provide an introduction to the many opportunities for biomimicry as well as emphasising the definite links with cellular engineering approaches.
