  • Abstract
    We derive approximate expressions for the protection coefficient in mesh optical networks. The protection coefficient is the ratio between the total bandwidth of protection traffic over the total bandwidth of working traffic, under the path dedicated protection scheme. Using the proposed expressions the protection coefficient can be estimated without the knowledge of the network topology, with a mean error of 6%.
