  • Abstract
A versatile X-ray source has been designed based on a unitary pulse power system. The source makes it possible to perform investigation and tests in a wide range of quantum energy. A line pulse transformer with a stored energy of 250 kJ is used as a base for powering the system [1]. The design of a multi-purpose pulse generator (MIG) is a quite reasonable step in applying and developing the ideas and principles tried out in the systems SGM and SNOP [1–5]. The main idea of the work was to design a rather cheap versatile system allowing generation of high-power X-ray pulses in a varying range of quantum energy and studies on generation of high-power electron and ion beams as well. An analysis has shown a capacitive energy store with an energy < 300 J to be suitable. To form pulses of varying duration and voltages, use was made of wire opening switches, plasma opening switches, and fast forming lines.
