  • Abstract
This paper presents a street lighting system based on light emitting diodes (LEDs). The main characteristic of the proposed system is to supply the LEDs by the mains or by battery using only one flyback converter. This converter is also used to recharge this battery. The proposed system is designed for street lighting system applications without energy consumption from the mains during the Peak Load Time (PLT) or as an emergency lighting system. The LEDs are used due to their long useful life, high color rendering index, directional light emission, and high luminous efficacy. A design methodology of the proposed system is presented aiming high power factor, so that the same converter can be used as power factor correction stage. The complete circuit was implemented and experimental results are shown in order to validate the design methodology, which complies with the IEC 61000-3-2 standard.
